My letter cutting isn't so good... but my spacing is - good spacing in stone makes the letters look much better than they are... FRANCIS BAKER - London Monumental Mason

I learnt how to recognise balance and (profile) shape characterisation from an apprenticeship as a typographic designer and signwriter - draw 'C, E, O' with pencil and eraser a 20cm height Helvetica, Franklin, Bodoni, Univers and Gill, accurately and you have the basis for the first rung of exceptional detailing skills. Then repeat at different sizes a few dozen times.
